A Troubled Night

Actually got off work early (err..on-time, actually. Sad when leaving 'ontime' translates to 'early'. Anyway) I decided to mess around with fitting out my little ship, but I couldn't do anything because I didn't have enough money or space.

I tried to figure out how to get back to the place where I had left off, as far as missions go, but couldn't. The names were too unfamiliar, and there's no straightline path to the next 'place'. I wandered around, and tried to figure out how to steer my ship to go do some mining or something. No dice. Apparently the arrow keys don't control your ship's movement. The mouse just controls your camera view, which always rotates around your ship. Ugh. That kind of thing makes me motionsick, especially if I'm looking one way and moving another - which this game does a lot of. If you tell the autopilot to go to the nearest stargate, it will, even if it means rotating the ship on you. That's not fun for me. I never did figure out how to move the ship, nor how to mine an asteroid to get some raw materials to sell or something. I set up some more training stuff, then decided to create a new character.

Here's another thing I don't like about EVE - only one character per account can train at a time. That's very different from every other MMO I've played, where each is independent of the other. So my new noob has to sit till the old noob finishes training. Blech.

On top of that, the sound was stuttering all night, and when I tried to log off, the game locked up - in mid sound. That was irritating.

These aren't really show stoppers, but they definitely aren't endearing me to this game. Plus the UI is not intiuitive, and I feel like I'm going to have to read a 500 page manual to know what the heck I'm doing or even how to do it.

Maybe if I had more time on my hands, it might be different.

EVE is one of the least restrictive MMOs on the market today... While that is a GREAT thing once you get used to the game, it does make it a bit challenging in the begining...
The most important lesson for ANY new player in EVE is this: "Complete the starter missions!!" They have been designed to teach you everything you'll need to get started... The second most important lesson is: "Study!" As with everything rewarding in life, EVE is not "easy".. There are TONS of informative sites on the net which can tell you how to go about finding the right agent for mission-running, how to skip all the NPC fighting, mission running and go straight to the low-sec player-hunting (pirating), how to mine asteroids and make tons of isk (money), or even how to become a manufacturing giant and dominate one sector (or more) of the market....
I guess my point is this: you will NOT learn EVE quickly (and maybe not at all if you don't study and do the tutorial missions [or at least not before becoming frustrated and quiting]) and this is one of the great things about the game.... EVE is a harsh universe which is NOT for the timid nor the people who want an MMO to lead them by the hand from start-to-finish.. EVE is for a higher class of gamer which wants freedom to develop their character how they want him/her to develop.. For a gamer who wants to do what they want to do, not what the programmers want them to do..

In short, don't give up! This game IS worth the time it takes to learn!

hey, i played this game from 05 thru 09 on and off (on up til 08, taken a couple extended breaks (quits) since then due to a lot of what i loved about the game being changed)

but yeah what i will say is that while its got a learning curve like a cliff, this is the most rewarding mmorpg ive ever played. the pvp was all i really cared about and due to ccp effectively ruining solo play for anyone who's not a billionaire, i quit, but there really is a lot of stuff to get into in this game

every now and then ive checked back on this site (used to blog here) and never seen anything new, so its nice to see a fresh face :)

take it easy man, hope the computer problems get sorted
